Podcast quiet

Keeping your podcast room quiet while recording

Silence is raw material for interviews, not a luxury. Prepare the room and habits for Podcast recording at Monogamyvault in busy central Amsterdam.

Why quiet is hard in the Jordaan

Canal houses share trams, bicycle bells and neighbours on steep stairs. Our podcast table seats up to 4 guests with broadcast mics; the space is treated, not a bunker. What you and guests do before and during recording decides whether editing is mostly content or repair.

Rates run from €92 per hour to €268 per episode up to ninety minutes, or a six-episode package at €1,450. Quiet habits save time directly — fewer edits mean faster publishing on your schedule.

Before you enter the studio

Phones on aeroplane mode, not vibrate — buzz and screen glare sometimes reach the table. Drop keys, coins and chains in a bowl by the door; metal on wood prints on condensers. Zip heavy coats before you sit, not mid-story.

Share these notes in the guest invite. Include Trams 3, 13 and 17 stop at Haarlemmerplein; from there it is about a 4-minute walk via Haarlemmerdijk and Elandsgracht. From Amsterdam Central Station it is roughly a 12-minute walk via Haarlemmerdijk. The studio entrance is at street level beside the bicycle racks. and ask guests five minutes early so the room settles before levels are set. Cancellation and deposit rules live in terms and conditions; inside 4 days of the session, different terms apply than months ahead.

Table, chairs and movement

Do not lean on the table edge; vibration travels up the stand. Use studio chairs — office casters from home add low rumble. If you use notes, rest paper on a pad; otherwise shuffles between questions print loudly.

Drink from a screw-top bottle or soft cup without rattling lids. Keep glasses away from sensitive stands. Cough or sneeze? Turn off-axis and cover with a sleeve — we mark the take and punch in if needed.

Voice and breath without extra noise

Podcast voices need not shout; whispering is risky too — you sit close and every mouth click grows. Speak at normal interview volume; the engineer sets gain. Breathe through the nose between sentences; audible inhales are fixable but eat edit time.

If you are ill, consider moving the date. Hoarse voices sound dramatic but long sessions strain you and lengthen editing. General health tips are not medical advice; pain or lasting hoarseness belongs with a clinician.

What we do in the room

For Podcast recording we close curtains, check door seals and fit windscreens. Headphones let guests hear each other without talking over mics. We listen to the environment before the intro: trams on Haarlemmerdijk sometimes peek through — we pause a second or take a short break.

Basic editing sits in the episode rate; heavy noise reduction on voices changes tone. We prefer quiet takes to aggressive plugins afterward. See podcast recording and FAQ for what is included.

Home studio versus our table

Many hosts record remote guests online; in studio everyone sits in one balanced space. If you work hybrid, test your home room: close windows, switch off fridge cycles, ask housemates not to vacuum during recording. Compare honestly with studio takes — the gap is often steady background, not magic.

For vocal intros or jingles, add vocal recording in our booth and keep tone consistent with table episodes.

Host checklist

  1. Send guests quiet rules and directions.
  2. Arrive without rattling objects.
  3. Phones off, notes still, drinks without glass rattle.
  4. Normal volume; pause for coughs or trams outside.
  5. Leave buffer after wrap for off-mic chat.

Need loudness for Spotify and Apple Music later? Podcast mastering is not the same as music mastering — read loudness for streaming for the difference. If a producer handles intro music, delivering stems for mixing keeps handoffs clean.
