Why preparation buys studio time

In Amsterdam you book the room in blocks, not line by line. At Monogamyvault an engineer runs the session from the control room while you work in an isolated booth; setup takes a few minutes, then you want to record. Lyrics, backing tracks and references sorted in advance mean fewer retakes and more headroom for emotion.

Vocal rates start at €105 per hour, with half-day and full-day options when you plan several songs. Sharper prep spreads that time across creative work instead of hunting files on your phone.

One week out

Lock lyrics and structure. Mark breaths, tongue-twisters and lines where you want a second pass with a different feel. Listen to the instrumental daily, even briefly, until every entry feels automatic.

Send us a short brief via contact: genre, tempo, desired mic character (warm, close, aggressive) and reference tracks if you have them. That lets the engineer prepare routing before doors open Mon–Fri 9:30–18:30, Sat 12–17. Cancellations within 4 days of the session follow our terms and conditions; build slack if your voice reacts to hay fever or heavy work weeks.

Files and technical basics

Deliver the instrumental as uncompressed WAV or AIFF, ideally 24-bit, with a consistent sample rate (44.1 or 48 kHz). Keep a local copy on laptop or USB — the building has reliable internet, but we prefer not to depend on downloads mid-session.

Avoid mp3 for the final session unless it is a temporary demo; lossy files hide issues that surface during mixing. Name files clearly: title, tempo, key. If several versions exist, mark which one is master. When you later export stems, matching names helps; read delivering stems for mixing ahead of time.

Health and routine on session day

Hydrate with room-temperature water through the morning, not only in the booth. Many singers skip dairy and heavy meals for two to three hours beforehand; eat lightly so the diaphragm moves freely. Moderate coffee is fine for most voices; a large espresso right before headphones often shows up as tension in the take.

Sleep beats any hack. If your voice is hoarse or painful, reschedule rather than push — nobody wins from strained files. This is general guidance; persistent symptoms belong with a clinician, not a louder comp.

Arriving at Elandsgracht

Trams 3, 13 and 17 stop at Haarlemmerplein; from there it is about a 4-minute walk via Haarlemmerdijk and Elandsgracht. From Amsterdam Central Station it is roughly a 12-minute walk via Haarlemmerdijk. The studio entrance is at street level beside the bicycle racks. Allow a few minutes to settle; we are open Monday–Friday 09:30–18:30, Saturday 12:00–17:00, Sunday closed.. Sessions without a guardian require age 16 or older — otherwise bring a parent or manager.

Bring: lyrics on paper or offline on your phone, headphones if you rely on your own pair, laptop power adapter, water and non-sticky throat lozenges without menthol if you use them. Leave jewellery that taps the pop filter at home. At street level we meet you with the engineer; the site has 2 vocal booths and 18 preamp channels to choose from.

In the booth: distance, foldback and takes

Stand roughly a hand-width from the pop filter, slightly farther on loud consonants or screams. Ask for monitor adjustments before you attack the hardest line: too much click makes you shy, too little makes you push. Many vocalists drop one earcup to hear themselves in the room — say so and we rebalance foldback.

We flag takes as we go so you stay in performance mode. Take breaks before fatigue; ten quiet minutes and water cost less than another €105 repeating what you already had. Afterward we agree which takes move to mix; project archives follow our terms for up to 18 months.

Voice-over and rap specifics

For narration: read aloud at home with a timer. Commercial scripts often hit exact seconds; note where you must tighten pace. Keep paper still — rustle prints louder on condensers than you expect.

For rap: practise breaths between bars so you never swallow words mid-line. Plan doubles after the main take lands; then you match energy instead of improvising timing. For full production later, see mixing and mastering; vocal-only bookings stay under Vocal and voice-over recording.
